2007 FISHING REPORTS

TUNA & BASS TRIPS

September 2007

We have had a great September and early October catching school bluefin tuna, jumbo pollock, cod, haddock and other groundfish along with some striped bass and bluefish. This season is shaping up to be one of the best we have had and we appreciate the patronage of those anglers who have fished with us.

We have openings for shared charters for this coming Friday, Oct 5th and other dates including weekedays and weekends for both private and shared charters. If you want a chance to get out and catch tuna (thousands of them seen yesterday) along with a chance to fill the freezer with fresh fillets for the winter now is the time to get out and fish.

Please send me an e-mail or call us at 781-871-2113 if interested and need more information.

TUNA TRIP

September 14, 2007

Once again I had the opportunity to have on board RELENTLESS long time customer John Niemera from New Milford, CT for a combination trip for tuna and groundfish. Joining John were family and friends, some who came up from the Tampa, Florida area to try their luck at landing a school tuna fish. Our mate for the day was Captain Curt and after a quick safety brief we departed on time at 5:00 AM for our long ride of an hour and fifteen minutes to the grounds. We ran across Cape Cod Bay and were entertained by a nice sunrise and arrived to find good signs of bait and put ot our three line spread of squid bars working down the backside of Cape Cod.

After 15 minutes of trolling in an easterly direction we were came across large groups of whales, baits and birds. At that moment I stated, I am marking fish and less than a minute later, the port outrigger pops and we are on with a fish. It was only right to put Adrian from Florida on the rod and after about a twenty minute battle Curt expertly leadered the fish within gaffing range and we landed our first bluefin tuna of the day, a decent fish at 48".

After getting the fish bled and into the box, I did not want to waste any time and had the lines out and were seeing fish all over the place busting on bait and porpoising. We headed a little to the north and into deeper water when I saw a splash behind the port rigger, the fished missed but came back and we were on the port rod again. This time Steve, also from Florida was on the rod and landed a fish that was 45".

Once again, we did not want to waste any time getting the lines out knowing this hot bite would not last all day. We were trolling trhough schools of finicky tuna that would not bite and after about 15 minutes and trolling through some weed, I was ready to ask Curt to do a weed check when a decent fish crashed down on the starboard rigger making the first real decent run of the day. This time Paul from CT grabbed the rod and was having a ball fighting this fish. While fighting the fish we had tuna busting right next to the boat all around us. Not knowing if th fish would be legal size, greater than 47" we opted to just slid him right through the door with Curt leadering him in. I was on the bridge and soon had color and while keeping the boat in gear, Capt Curt was able to slide in the little butterball which could have been gaffed after measuring 50".

These three anglers had our legal limit aboard the RELENTLESS by 8:30 AM and we decided to head off shore to try our luck at some groundfishing for pollock, haddock, and cod and other species. After punching in some numbers, Capt Curt was busy cleaning, gutting and icing down the mornings catch of three bluefin tuna. After about an hour's ride we arrived on location and had our rigs redy which consists of Shimano, Torium 30's filled with 80 LB braid and matched to Shakesphere ugly sticks.

This group of five anglers dropped their jigs and teasers in about 325 feet and it was not long before large pollock (10-25 LBS) starting inhaling the jigs. Mny of the anglers had nice doubles throughout the morning.

After getting our fill of several pollock, topping off the fish box we steamed to a location catching haddock and a few cod. We only managed about a dozen haddock but the day was getting late and the southerly winds were now increasing and it was time to go home. On the way home, Curt filleted all the way to the jetty and once docked we had three tuna to clean. Curt and myself, finished cleaning the tuna and did not leave the boat till early evening after putting away all of the gear and scrubbing things down.

By the end of the day it was one of our best trips of the year sending this group of five anglers home with large bags of fillets of groundfish and tuna for steaks and sashimi. They are already talking about another trip which does not surprise me as John has booked with us several times in the past.

Speaking of trips, we have openings for shared and private charters to fill your freezers with groundfish and tuna. Please call me at (781) 871-2113
or e-mail me at captdave@relentlesscharters.com for a great day on the water.

TUNA TRIP

August 29, 2007

Today we had aboard the Rich Barnes party for a two boat trip aboard RELENTLESS and OCEAN RUNNER. Rich and his party are from upstate New York and wanted to make the trip to Stellwagen to try for some Bluefin Tuna.

I called Rich yesterday who was in Albany early evening and told him I wanted to be off the dock at 0400. The groups arrived on time and I felt good about the early start with the recent early morning feeding that has been going on. There was no wind at all which I was not too excited about. We arrived on the bank in the dark to find about eight boats already trolling. We set our rigs out in the late moonlight and worked the edge of the bank. I only saw a few fish caught after two hours and was cursing about the lack of wind and made a move to an area I found the prior day with much more life consisting of bait, whales and birds. Once there and after ten minutes we hit our first fish a nice 48" bluefin tuna.

We quickly got back on the troll and could not get a hit. Greg checked the rigs for weed and set out the lines when we herd that beautiful sound of pop, followed by the sound of a screaming reel. Tater reeled in a nice 46" butterball which gave him a pretty good battle on the Shimano 50 class outfits.

We kept working the area and the port black squid bar was hit again hard on the flat line right behind the transom and this time Rich landed a nice 48" fish giving us our legal limit for the day. At the end of the day we landed one more 48" fish which was landed quickly and released for another day. Our other boat landed two nice tuna for the day and Rich and his party went home with enough tuna to feed friends and family for a while.

We will be running more shared and private charters for tuna and other species while they are here and hungry. If interested in getting out, please send us an e-mail.

It was an awesome day on the water and can't wait to get back out there again in the AM.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

July 7, 2007
Chris Nichols of Marshfield, MA displays his first
tuna landed aboard RELENTLESS.

Fishing with us today was Paul Brancato who wanted to take his nephew Chris Nichols striped bass fishing prior to him heading off to his first year at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. Once we arrived we managed to locate a few bass and blues when a friend called me on the radio mentioning the striped bass bite was hot and to get offshore in a hurry. Well, it was not really offshore it was only a four mile run to the area of the PH buoy and it was not long before we were set up on the troll. Within 15 minutes I heard the starboard outrigger pop which was rigged with a black squid bar. Chris put the Braid harness on and he fought his first bluefin tuna for about 20 minutes bringing a 44” fish close to the boat when our mate, Jimmy McFarland sank the gaff perfectly into the fish and hoisted it aboard. This was a nice day aboard even though the bass and blues could have been a little more cooperative. To me the best part of the day was watching Chris, his dad, grandfather and uncles all together enjoying a day on board RELENTLESS. I know Chris will enjoy MMA even though it is a very demanding school preparing young men and women for a successful career whether it is on board a ship or ashore. Thanks Paul and everyone for fishing with us aboard RELENTLESS and we hope we can do it again next year.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

July 6, 2007

After a few days off celebrating our nation's Independence Day it was time to get back to fishing. We had on board the Tom Schindler party from Rhode Island who had committed a kidnapping the night before. You see there was a man in his group who had no idea where they were going so early in the AM. His name was Eric O’Brien and the guys were aboard to send him out in style for his bachelor party. Once they arrived at the boat and steaming over to Race Point we trolled for a while and the tuna did not want to eat. We decided to go bass fishing and Brad Deegan and Matt McCabe showed the rest of the guys how to land those big bass when they each respectfully landed a 25 and 30 LB striped bass. Later we chased tuna again, which had one thing on their mind and it was to keep pushing into Cape Cod Bay and not stop to eat. Even though we did not get a tuna on this trip the guys did a great job landing striped bass and bluefish. Once we arrived at the dock, the plan was to head out to the bars in Newport and get Eric in trouble with his new bride before they were even married. The crew of RELENTLESS wants to thank Tom and his group for fishing with us and of course we wish Eric and his bride the best of luck.

TUNA TRIP

July 3, 2007

After having a successful day two days earlier with the guys from the jigging and popping crew from Brooklyn, NY, I decided to fish the area off Race Point. After the one hour or so steam we arrived to find no signs of fish and a fairly strong SW wind. I had on board Conner Sullivan from Gloucester, MA, his brother Patrick and their father Tim. After heading into Cape Cod Bay we put out the lines for trolling, using two black and a pink squid bars. The rigs looked great and it was only moments before we saw our first school of busting tuna and proceeded towards them. These fish were finicky and would not touch a single bait. Throughout the day we located huge schools of tuna with literally thousands in a single school and none wanted to eat a squid bar, Rapala or any other lure we placed in front of their noses all day. Even though we did not hook up this day, it was unbelievable to watch the fish rolling, flashing and swimming besides RELENTLESS all day long. Once again, this is why it is called fishing and not catching and the Sullivan’s certainly knew we worked our hardest to put fish on the deck.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

July 1, 2007
John Flores lands a 45" tuna aboard RELENTLESS

Jigging and Popping

Last week I received a call from Randy Chin of Brooklyn New York who owns Anglers Pro Shop in Brooklyn, New York with his partner Sami who wanted to go tuna fishing. It thought great let's go and then the bomb dropped when Randy stated, we will be bringing our own gear and it is all jigging and popping rods. I was up for a new challenge as I know RELENTLESS is no center console but thought we could do it and the trip was set to go for today, Sunday July 1st.

Feeling lucky after the last two days I had eleven hook ups trolling for tuna with squid bars, landing ten fish overall. Today, Randy, Sami, Ishmal and John Flores fished with us. During the past two days everything was primarily in the afternoon and yesterday's showing of big bunches of tuna feeding and milling on top had me excited about today. I told the guys getting out there at first light would not be necessary due to the afternoon action.

Leaving Green harbor in Marshfield, MA we saw our first busting fish three miles out of the harbor and observed a small center console hooked up on a spinning rod. After a few casts and no more fish showing I recommended we head offshore and found no bait at all when we arrived. After being patient we located a few small pods of breaking fish as the guys were jigging and popping away.

John knows how to handle these fish on spinning gear.

We made a slight move and located a few small pods of breaking fish which were coming towards RELENTLESS. John threw out a stick bait while the other guys threw various poppers and plugs when John got hit and was off. Everyone reeled in and I fired up the boat and needed to turn hard to port when the fish decided he wanted to go under the boat and forward. Once straightened out John was able to put pressure on the fish and started to gain some serious braid back. The fish was soon in sight and was quickly gaffed by Ishmal. John's fish was 45" and very round and fat and thrown in the box for some future sashimi.

After a few photos the east wind picked up and there was no fish showing at all. We looked around and found nothing and decided to head west to about 10 miles east of Plymouth where we found a few small piles of busting fish which were basically on cruise control and not feeding. We finally found a small bunch of feeding tuna when John scored again and after a few seconds the leader parted. At the end of the day we had a tally of 01 landed and 01 lost.

This jigging and popping for tuna was new to me but certainly has sparked a new interest as this is challenging as a captain trying to place the boat in the proper position to give the anglers the best shot at hooking up. Randy stated they will definitely be back within the month to give jigging and popping aboard RELENTLESS another try.

Remember, we still have openings for private and shared charters for these fish, please give us a call or e-mail and we can discuss open dates and give you the trip of the summer.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

June 30, 2007
Al Fichera of Raynham, MA displays a bluefin tuna he landed aboard Relentless on June 30. 2007.

What a day we had today aboard RELENTLESS chasing school tuna off of Provincetown. Today I had on board repeat customer Al Fichera from Raynham, MA along with his wife Mimi and twelve year old son Joseph. Last evening I received a late phone call from a couple asking if we had any openings for tuna fishing and Larry and Val Fallon made the trek from Western Massachusetts to come aboard at the last minute. It was ironic I was able to put this together because I had just canceled a scheduled trip but I will not get into details.

Joseph Fichera smiles with pride as he landed his first bluefin tuna which weighed 65 LBS aboard RELENTLESS.

Leaving Green Harbor at 0530 we encountered a SSW wind blowing around 10 knots and seas 2-3 feet. Once we arrived at Race Point and came around the corner the seas kicked up a bit making it interesting. Our Mate, Jim McFarland, my son's room mate at Massachusetts Maritime Academy set out the three rigs, one pink, one green machine and one black 13 inch bar. After trolling for about 10 minutes in 190' of water the pink bar got it and the fish was off to the races. After clearing all lines, Joseph buckled in and after just 15 minutes, Joseph landed his first tuna of his life which measured 45" and put into the box on ice for the grill. He did a great job keeping steady pressure on the fish.

Val Fallon from Western Massachusetts knew what she was doing as she does battle with a school bluefin tuna aboard RELENTLESS.

About 15 minutes later we hooked up again and it was Val's turn on the rod where she did a fantastic job bringing another 45" fish to the boat which was released unharmed. While trolling off the beach we had the opportunity to observe a torpedo about 700 LBS launch itself clear out of the water about 10 feet chasing bluefish.

After trolling this area for a while and not having much luck I decided to head a little west where we found several pods of fish chasing bait. We had so many pods to chose to run through it was hard to decide which way to turn. After a few passes Al was on when the starboard rig got hit. Al landed a nice fat 46" fish which was also released after hitting a pink squid bar.

After we got re-organized, and everything was quiet trolling the port black bar got hit and this time it was Larry's turn to man the rod. He did a great job with some encouraging words from his wife Val and he landed a fish that was 44". With everyone having landed a fish it was now Mimi's turn and after about twenty minutes of trolling she hooked up on a fish that slammed the rig with a vengeance. After five minutes though the fish shook off and we set out again. Not wanting Mimi to be the only one without a fish for the day we looked hard and the port rig got hit again and boy did this fish take some serious line on it's initial run. After about a 12 minute battle Mimi landed her first bluefin tuna which was just shy of 45" and released unharmed.

At the end of the day we were 5 for 6 and for two days of fishing landed ten bluefin tuna with 11 hookups which I was quite pleased with.

It was a great day on the water with a great group and I can not tell you the feelings I get watching anglers land their first bluefin tuna. I want to thank this group, wish them the very best and hope I see them again in the future. Al and Joseph have already booked another tuna trip in August.

If you want to get into these fish, now is the time to go, I have openings during July and now is a great time to get out and have an excellent shot of landing one of these fish.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

June 29, 2007
Matt Strother with a nice tuna

Coming aboard today for a charter for groundfish was the party of Ken, John, Kevin and Mike Palladino from Connecticut and Matt Strother from Ashland, MA.After being told of a decent tuna bite, we changed our plans to conduct a combination tuna and bass trip. We departed Green Harbor at 0530 and headed to Stellwagen in a crappy NE Wind when it was forecasted to be out of the Northwest. When we arrived on the bank a friend called and stated he had fish at Wood End and so I decided to head south to fish much calmer water. After five minutes of trolling we picked up our first fish hitting a pink squid bar and after a short battle gaffed the 45" keeper.

Mike Palladino lands a nice tuna

It certainly was not a giant but a quality fish placed into the box to provide tuna steaks and sashimi. After seeing a few more busting we heard news of fish off of Peaked Hill Bar and proceeded in that direction. After running a few miles I decided with two sea sick customers, we would not make it down there today. Setting out the rigs in 200' of water off of Race Point and the seas were still a bit choppy we hoped for the best. I soon noticed birds working and sure enough we located some fish. The port rigger went off and after working hard the fish was landed and released which was around 45".

Ken Palladino with another nice tuna.

The next fish hit a center flat line with a black squid bar and a white stinger. Shortly later we landed a fish that was 46" on the flat line again After covering a little more ground we hit our final fish of the day which was 48" and kept for the folks to take home. Later we headed into shallower water where we landed a few nice striped bass on jigs and wire.

John Palladino with another nice tuna.

It was a great day going five for five and a few misses along with reports from boats all over the place landing fish today. I heard of one fish on Stellwagen Bank that was a possible giant and another in the area I fished that was 66". I want to thank Ken and the rest of his party along with Matt for fishing aboard RELENTLESS with us and we hope to see them back again in the future.

TUNA - STRIPED BASS TRIP

June 25, 2007

Chris Whiting holds a large striped bass he caught on board RELENTLESS on a tuna and striped bass combination trip.

On Monday the crew of RELENTLESS had on board Ed Cooper who is an active duty Coast Guardsman stationed in the Boston area. Joining him from Ruskin, Florida was his sister Marj, her husband Wayne and their son Chris who is majoring in biochemistry at Florida State. The plan for the day was to get offshore to Stellwagen Bank and get in on the action for some school bluefin tuna fishing. Arriving at Stellwagen Bank at the Southwest corner we found only a few boats in the early morning hours trolling for these fish. Immediately after putting out the rigs we were pounded by bluefish which could not resist the rigs. Throughout the norning we watched friends and others land some of the tuna up to 65" and around 175 LBS. We did not see any fish busting and could not get them to eat. I believe there were several fish in the area but they were finicky on this day.

We departed the area to finish up with striped bass fishing and on the way over to Race Point we came across a school of tuna which appeared to be small school fish which was 50 yards square and pushing on top, just cruising into Cape Cod Bay. You could see them flashing right beside the boat and as we eased over to put the rigs in front of the school they would not eat. They are tough to bait when in this mode and we even tried dropping baits back into the school and cranking like mad. We also observed a small pod of larger fish pushing next to the boat which were easily over 250 LBS. Even though it was not our day tuna fishing, it is shaping up to be a great season with all of the tuna and bait around.

Ed Cooper of Buzzards Bay MA displays the largest striped bass he has ever caught while fishing on board RELENTLESS.

Once we gave up on the tuna we proceeded to fish Race Point and landed several good striped bass and bluefish for Ed and his party to take home for the grill. The highlight of the day was watching Ed and Chris land two beautiful fish on black and red jigs in about 20 feet of water. After the ride home, Jerry filleted everything up and said our goodbyes. I wish Ed good luck with his new assignment this year and want to thank him for his patronage.

Currently RELENTLESS has openings for both shared and private charters. I am going to focus in July for Striped Bass and Tuna running combination and open boat (shared charters) along with private trips. If you are interested in going on one of these trips, call us now at (781) 871-2113 to discuss dates. Don't miss out on a chance to land the fish of a lifetime while they are only a little over an hour from the docks.

STRIPED BASS TRIP

June 24, 2007

On Sunday, June 24th the crew of RELENTLESS had on board repeat customer Brad Hatch who traveled a mere one mile from his home in Marshfield for a day of striped bass fishing. Joining him was his son Matt, son-in-law Mike and Brad's grandson Jimmy who is 7 years old. Last year Brad and his family fished with us and had a great day fishing for striped bass and blues limiting out in no time. Well, this year would be different as we all know every day is not the same when on the water. We started fishing in the area of Peaked Hill Bar in the deep water after marking large piles of bass and blues and after putting out the 9er rigs we immediately had large fish on each rig. This was going to be another one of those great trips again, so I thought. As Jimmy reeled in his first offshore fish ever, with a little help from his father Mike, Greg our mate pulled in the rig which had two very large bluefish around ten pounds each. The other rig had the same which Brad landed and we kept two and threw two back to help feed the tuna fish in the area.

After departing the area and heading to shallower water we had a slow day jigging striped bass but landed some for the grill along with a few more bluefish. It was just one of those slow days that surprised us. To me the highlight of the day was watching Jimmy jig with wire, never quitting or whining like some others have done in the past and having memories that will last a lifetime fishing with his uncle, dad and grandfather. This of course in my eyes made it a great trip. We did get to see some nice humpback whales on the way home getting to listen to Jimmy "oooh" and "aaah" watching humpback whales. I did not have the camera operational this day, I forgot the memory card and will try to add a few photos from Brad once he sends them to me. Once again, we appreciate their patronage and hope we can do it again next year.

COD TRIP

June 16, 2007

Everyone semed to get into the wolffish action.

On Saturday, June 16th I finally got to head offshore for some fishing after the Northeast storm that sat offshore resulted in three cancellations. Fishing with us was Clyde Thomas and his core of friends, Paul Weller and his brother Mike Weller. Ed Miller and his son Ryan, and Jim Schriefer who all but Ryan work at the Coast Guard yard in Baltimore, MD http://www.uscg.mil/systems/gse/yard/index.htm. The Coast Guard yard is a commercial type shipyard which employees over 500 shipfitters, welders, carpenters, painters, etc who conduct repair work on Coast Guard vessels and at times actually build the boats. They built over 300 41' utility boats that are still in service today along with the modern 49' buoy boat that some are familiar with.

Clyde Thomas and his party came to Green Harbor to fish aboard RELENTLESS for cod and Haddock.

After steaming east of Stellwagen on a day with little wind and a NE swell, we stopped in about 175' of water and using jigs and bait landed a mixed bag of cod, haddock and surprisingly five wolffish with the largest one being around 22 lbs. The numbers of cod were a little low but the haddock surely made up for the lack of cod fish in the area. Most of the haddock were landed on fresh sea clams however this group landed several on jigs.

This is one mean looking wolfish this angler landed while fishing aboard RELENTLESS on June 16th, 2007.

Later in the day we headed to Race Point to try to get a few stripers for the grill and landed one keeper along with several bluefish. Unfortunately we arrived at slack tide and the fish just were not in an eating mood. After arriving at the dock after our mate Jim filleted the day's catch Clyde booked another trip aboard RELENTLESS.

This angler holds a nice haddock he caught aboard RELENTLESS while cod and haddock fishing on Stellwagen Bank.

In the next two days we will be gearing up for the great bluefin bite that is now taking place on Stellwagen Bank and also be conducting some more shared charters for cod fishing along with tuna. We currently have openings for shared charters for this Friday and next weekend If anyone is interested in a tuna or cod trip, shared or private, please send us an e-mail at captdave@relentlesscharters.com to ensure you get a great date.

COD TRIP

June 3, 2007

This angler displays one of several large haddock he landed aboard RELENTLESS.

Mark Dellert stepped aboard RELENTLESS with his friends from CT and MA on Sunday, June 3rd. Departing the dock early with hazy conditions and a slight SW breeze, we headed east of Stellwagen Bank for a day of cod and haddock fishing. Once we arrived at a piece of bottom we thought might produce, the guys dropped the jigs and clams and were met by bent poles right away. Once they reeled in you could see the siver sided haddock and a nice wolf fish come over the rail. Throughout the day and not a single move this group managed to land plenty of large haddock, some cod and a nice wolffish. Most of the fish were landed on sea clams in about 150 ft of water with some very large bull haddock being landed. It was very foggy most of the day and the wind turned to the Northeast and picked up. There were many whales in the area feeding on the sand eels that have been all over Stellwagen Bank this year providing some great entertainment for all of the anglers while fishing. At the end of the day, Mark and his friends had bags with plenty of large fillets of cod, haddock and wolf fish for many dinners. This group from CT, stated they intend to book a combination groundfishing and school tuna trip aboard RELENTLESS this August.

Repeat customer Mark Dellert from CT shows off another large haddock landed on board RELENTLESS.

I wish we had the same type of fishing the day before for Stewart and his party but every day is different on the ocean. All we can do is keep moving until we find the quanity and quality of fish we are targeting.

It was bull haddock time aboard RELENTLESS using fresh sea clams.

Once again we have available dates for shared charters on Friday, June 8th and we want to also fill Sunday, June 10th. If you are interested in coming aboard for either a private or shared charter please give us a call or send us an e-mail while the fishing is still excellent. Don't forget the tuna fishing trips, with the water warming up, it will not be long before these magnificent fish arrive.

Well I guess all good things must come to an end. Last week we were doing excellent, catching good sized market cod off of an area of Stellwagen Bank known as the "mussels". There were plenty of recreational anglers along with charter boats with most recording decent catches and plenty of action. This area reopened to commercial fishing and made dropping a jig in the area challenging.

This angler fishing aboard RELENTLESS
landed this market cod fish.

On Saturday, RELENTLESS had on board Stewart Duncan from CT who has fished with us before and was looking forward to catching some decent cod and haddock. Unfortunately the fishing was horrific and the worst day I have had in years. It was not due to a lack of effort by myself or the anglers aboard who worked their tails off trying to hook fish both on jig and bait. On the way out, the bank was loaded with bluefish, very large bluefish chasing sand eels, where we trolled rubber shad and landed a few to put our first blues of the year on board the RELENTLESS.

Stewart Duncan of CT holds a large wolffish
he landed aboard RELENTLESS.

Stew and his party were great to have aboard and I honestly believe they knew how hard we were trying to put fish in the coolers. I tried like crazy and the numbers were very low and I appreciated them understanding. While driving home, I was wondering where I would head to Sunday when another repeat customer was coming aboard.

COD TRIP

May 28, 2007

I guess good things don't last forever as far as fishing goes. On Monday we had out the Mike Vogt party of East Haven, CT for a day of fishing aboard RELENTLESS. With a little breeze and chop the ride out to Stellwagen Bank was nice and once we started fishing we knew it would be a long day. Finding about ten boats in the area it was not too long before only a couple were left due to the slow fishing. With several moves and hard work by the party they caught enough cod and haddock for several meals even though it was not the type of numbers we would have like to see. Many of the party thought the amazing show by the whales made the trip worthwhile and mentioned how hard we worked to locate the fish.

Keith Cavalieri had the largest cod and haddock for the day and did not let the rest of the group forget it during the ride home to CT. Mike has his own boat and through conversation with him and his friend Scott I could tell they were fishaholics, wetting a line whenever they get a chance. I wish them a great season fishing for bass and fluke in Long Island Sound and hope to see them back aboard RELENTLESS.

Anthony Caputo of Long Island New York holds one of the many cod fish he landed on an open boat charter aboard RELENTLESS.

Well Anthony Caputo and his friend John Brosnahan were back for another day of cod fishing aboard RELENTLESS after having an excellent day on the previous day. Joining him was Al Fichera of Raynham, MA and Bernie Thomas of Framingham, MA. Bernie is scheduled for a combination tuna and cod fishing trip later in the year.

The jig master himself Bernie Thomas with a pair of market sized cod caught on board RELENTLESS

Each of these anglers had all their own top quality tackle and knew how to fish not touching a clam during the day. Throughout the day we landed some good fish which ended up turning off when the tide went slack. Later in the day after making a short move we were able to get into some quality fish up to 25 LBS using jigs and teasers. This kept myself and our mate Brian very busy on deck and filleting on the way back to Green Harbor. By the end of the day each of the anglers had plenty of fillets to go home with after limiting out on cod. This was by far one of the best trips of the season.

This open boat trip was advertised hard and we could not get anyone else to go which surprise me and it was too bad because they missed out on some great action.

Some market sized cod caught on a shared charter by this group aboard RELENTLESS.

Fishing aboard RELENTLESS on May 26th on a shared charter was Anthony Caputo and his friend John Brosnahan from Long Island, NY who booked two days in a row aboard RELENTLESS. Joining them was repeat customer Jeff Reis of New Hampshire. Driving in from western, Massachusetts was Jeff Staples and his brother Ken along with their friend Pat Lynch. Fishing on the eastern side of Stellwagen Bank this group caught several good sized codfish using both jigs rigged with sand eel teasers. The bank is loaded right now with lots of sand eels and the fish are full of them when cut open. By the end of the day all of the anglers had plenty of fillets of cod and haddock to go around to provide several good meals. The fishing was fast and furious and even though we had to pick through lots of shorts, several nice cod fish were landed by the end of the day.

A market sized cod is brought aboard RELENTLESS on a cod jig.

I am not too sure what happened but most of the photos of this trip did not come out. Fishing the first day of Memorial day weekend on a shared charter was Jonathan Kenney of Medfield, MA and with him was Ken Taylor of Hyannis. Ken's daughter, who is Jon's girlfriend set this up as a gift. Also fishing with them was Dan Clark and his two friends from New Jersey. We departed Green Harbor, MA at 5:30 AM and had a great ride out to the bank where we located not only fish but several other boats in the area. Using mostly jigs during the day the anglers did well catching decent numbers of cod and a few haddock. After a move over to another area of the bank and anchoring up, this group of fisherman was able to put a couple dozen haddock in the coolers using bait after catching cod in the AM. Dan posted another report on another site and we appreciated the plug. I hope to see everyone again in the future and wish them all a great summer season fishing.

Scott with one of his many cod he landed aboard RELENTLESS.

Fishing aboard RELENTLESS on May 24th was Scott Khoury and his friends from the Groton, CT area. Scott is a charter boat captain himself who fishes Long Island Sound area. This group had brought several rods and reels with them and Captain Dave immediately recognized they knew how to fish. Fishing throughout the day they landed good numbers of cod and haddock on the bank in about 110 ft of water mostly on jigs. They still had to pick through shorts to put legal sized cod fish in the boat. Scott's group was a lot of fun to have aboard and we look forward to seeing them again.

Mitch Stein of New York, NY with a nice haddock caught on a sea clam aboard RELENTLESS.

Captain Dave had been requested by Captain Jim Walsh to run the 80' Party Boat American Classic for three days putting Captain Curt behind the helm of RELENTLESS. Dave left the dock out of Lynn, MA and Captain Curt out of our homeport, Green Harbor, MA. Curt met Dave out by the Northwest Corner where on board the Amercian Classic was a charter of 32 anglers. On board RELENTLESS was a shared charter consisting of Mitch Stein and three friends from NewYork, NY, repeat angler Wayne Wood and his friend. With a foggy day and whales all around during a fairly strong southwest breeze, Dave located a very nice pile of haddock and called the RELENTLESS over putting several nice sized cod and haddock aboard while the group got to be entertained by whales feeding and tail slapping right behind the boats. Hans filleted all of the fish provideing both Wayne and Mitch along with their friends plenty of fillets for the diner table. On the Amercian Classic, Captain Dave put over 300 haddock on board which had the mates filleting over an hour back at the dock.

One of the many large haddock landed aboard RELENTLESS on May 11th, 2007.

Wane Wood a repeat angler on board RELENTLESS displays a nice cod fish he landed.

The following day was too rough and RELENTLESS had to cancel but the seas were no match for the American Classic where Captain Dave stopped and put another 350 haddock along with several cod aboard. Sunday there were none around and he located some nice cod late in the day and the surprise was a 29" halibut caught on a jig and released. The fishing was turning on and with the bait around was a great sign for the coming weeks.

After steaming out to Stellwagen Bank this group of anglers landed good numbers of cod and haddock picking through several short fish to put legal sized cod in the box. Rich was blown out earlier in the year and picked a day when it was flat calm out. It was great having them aboard and the trip from CT was definitely worth the ride.

Barry had a great day fishing on board RELENTLESS on May 4th and 5th, 2007. Here is one of the many large haddock he had come over the rail.

RELENTLESS was part of a two boat charter with the charter boat Ocean Runner fishing the northern edge of Stellwagen Bank. We had a great group of guys on board who fish all the time who know how to have fun. They fish all over together and today we were fortunate to have them aboard. We headed to the top of Stellwagen Bank each day, anchored and did not have to move once. During each day they landed well over 60 haddock and wanted to be back to the dock early each day to take in the area. All of the haddock and some nice cod were landed on clams in about 150 ft of water. On the first day our mate Hans and on day two, Shaun, filleted all the way back to the dock providing a large cooler full of fillets for the trip back to New Jersey. They are now planning on coming back in August for a day of tuna fishing aboard RELENTLESS.

COD TRIP

May 3, 2007

The weather report was calling for a beautiful day for the waters of Stellwagen Bank. Fishing aboard RELENTESS on a shared, open boat charter was repeat customer Mark Boutiette and his father in law. Unfortunately Mark's dad was unable to make the trip after a recent fall and of course we are wishing him a speedy recovery. Also with us was Don Manning and his two friends fron the Suffern, NY area and repeat angler John Niemera from New Milford, CT. John fishes an Avet reel that is filled with braid and matched to an Ugly Stick rod that is awesome especially for the light haddock bite.

During the day these anglers caught several nice cod and haddock on both jigs rigged with eel teasers and fresh sea clams caught in local waters, providing each member of the party with plenty of fillets for the freezer and dinners for friends and family. We hope to see all of these guys back again for another shared or private fishing trip aboard RELENTLESS.

COD TRIP

The weather report was calling for some light rain and a breeze out of the northeast but nothing could stop repeat customer Alan Sharaf of Brookline, MA going fishing. Alan charters several boats a year and has been aboard RELENTLESS several times to go fishing for cod, tuna and striped bass. Today he had on board some first time fisherman along with experienced anglers. Joining Alan was Charles and Jennifer Clark of Braintree, MA and Michael Frost along with his brother and friend Hagstrom.

After an hour and 45 minute trip out to Stellwagen Bank the group of anglers landed several good numbers of cod using jigs and teasers. This was Jennifer's first cod fishing trip and she soon had the technique down for jigging and soon put several good sized fish in the box along with her husband Charles. As usual Alan did well bringing over the rail some nice doubles on his jig and teaser. The trip worked out well with all anglers landing decent fish and going home with plenty of fillets for the freezer. I am sure we will see Alan again before the year is out and I know he was thinking about his trip to the Florida Keys to fish in a few weeks where it would certainly be warmer and brighter than today was.

COD TRIP

April 26, 2007

The crew of RELENTLESS left the dock early with Brian Cooper and his friends from the Rhode Island area. Feeling it was the time of year to fish the backside off of Truro, MA where the cod will come in close to the beach chasing sand eels and mackerel we made the 2 hour and 15 minute jaunt down to the area. It was flat calm for the ride and once there found out we were the only charter boat in the area besides the two commercial gillnetters working the waters. After fishing a while and without putting a single fish in the boat we headed back to Stellwagen Bank realizing we needed to burn some fuel and find some fish. After steaming we located fish later in the day on the shoal water picking through shorts to go home with fair amounts of market sized cod. The fish were located on the southern end of the bank in 90' of water in an area where the whales were bubble feeding.

At the end of the day I felt bad about the way the day went until I received the following e-mail from Brian which was a nice gesture:

Thanks for the great time, laughs and the hard effort. You can tell you're more interested in making your customers happy than making the extra buck. You're a class act. Hope you have a great season.

Best Regards, Brian Cooper

These are the types of comments that we love to hear knowing we try to do our best at putting customers on fish and meeting the expectations by providing a top notch service with quality fishing tackle. Thanks again Brian and I am sure your next trip will be even better.

COD TRIP

The crew of RELENTLESS was underway again with a shared charter consisting of folks from Vermont all the way down to Florida for a day of cod and haddock fishing. Joining us today was repeat customer and by far one of the best jig fisherman I know, Bernie Thomas of Framingham, MA. Coming in from Palm Beach, FL was Donald Gold and his friend Joe Goldberg of Long Island. Steve Schuh from West Kingston, RI who fishes all over New England for cod and haddock drove up for the day along with Ed White of St. Albans, VT and his friend Nate Patrie of Plattsburgh, NY. The Fishing was conducted on the shoal waters of Stellwagen Bank using mostly jigs rigged with teasers where the bank was filled with sand eels and whales feeding on them. We landed 95 percent cod that day and a few haddock for the group to take home on a beautiful flat day. Shared charters are a great way of getting underway on a charter boat without having to find a full group of people to go. At the end of the day most of the party inquired about future trips and Ed and Nate are now in the process of making reservations for a cod and school bluefin tuna fishing trip in late summer or early fall so they can add some of those delicious bluefin tuna steaks in the freezer.

After the previous day of tough fishing with the Pat Lynch party of New Jersey RELENTLESS was underway again with the Jim Howard party of Troy, NY looking to go home with some nice cod and haddock for the freezer. Once again the fishing was a little slow but better than the previous day working the Western Edge of Stellwagen Bank. Jim and his party used jigs and teasers and fresh sea class to land fairly good numbers of cod and haddock, He has fished this area before and stated they would be back again for a day on the RELENTLESS. He knew we had worked hard and done everything possible to put fish in the box. We look forward to seeing them in the future for another trip.

Pat Lynch of New Jersey with a codfish he ladnded aboard RELENTLESS.

Getting underway early with clear skies and a chill in the air, the RELENTLESS departed the dock at 5:30 AM for a day of cod and haddock fishing. Fishing with Captain Dave was the Pat Lynch party from Galloway, NJ.

This was our first trip after a week of northeast wind and high seas. Once we were on Stellwagen Bank, we found the water was murky from all of the rain and the fishing was actually poor in my own opinion. Pat understood what we were up against and appreciated our efforts in trying to put the party on fish. It could only get better in days to come. I will say, even though the fishing was not up to par, all of the anglers worked hard and had great attitudes. I hope they return again after a better stretch of weather to see what the fishing is really like on Stellwagen bank aboard RELENTLESS in the spring through fall.

he caught aboard RELENTLESS.

Getting underway early with clear skies and a chill in the air, the RELENTLESS departed the dock at 5:30 AM for a day of cod and haddock fishing. Fishing with Captain Dave and Captain Curt were a group of four very talented anglers from New Jersey. The group included Tom Engel of Southampton, NJ, Tom Stone, Medford, NJ, Dave Frett, Westmont, NJ and Thomas Swider of Cape May, NJ.

Tom Stone of Medford, NJ holds a market cod caught aboard RELENTLESS while fellow angler Tom Engel is all smiles

The day started out slow fishing deep water east of Stellwagen Bank where we found good results during the past two trips. With a little wind blowing and fish not cooperating we headed back to the shallow waters on top of the bank. This provided pretty good results with the party landing nice size haddock and market sized cod. Fish were feeding on sand eels along with the gannets that were all over the area dive bombing into the water from high altitudes to come up with a meal.

Tom Stone of Medford, NJ holds a market cod
caught aboard RELENTLESS

Today’s fish were caught on clams and 16 oz jigs rigged with grubs as teasers. Due to the hard work of these guys they put respectable amounts of fish into the box with angler Tom Engel being the high hook for the day Captain Curt was busy all the way back to Green Harbor filleting the days catch. If the bite was better in the AM, it would have been and outstanding day. At the end of the day I spoke to other charter boat captains who had the same type of day. We would locate the fish, whack a few, go back to the spot and they were gone chasing bait hard and fast until you found another pile.

I want to thank Tom Engel and the rest of this great group for stepping aboard RELENTLESS for a day of fishing. I do not understand why but for some reason they feel folks here have this Boston accent which I have no idea what they are talking about. They fish hard year round and do quite a bit of giant sea bass fishing off the coast of New Jersey and were telling us about the exciting yellowfin and wahoo fishing around Fat Tuesday out of Venice, LA, something myself and Captain Curt would like to try.

Once again we have lots of dates open and if we can not get the date or have larger parties we have another boat we can put you on. Dates are also starting to fill for bass, blue and tuna trips.

I am planning on running a Memorial Day Weekend Shared Charters for Cod and Haddock so you can bring some fish chowder to the holiday barbecue this year.

Gary Tremblay of Sturbridge, MA with a nice cod

Repeat customer J.R. Carlow of Harrisville Rhode Island was aboard once again for a day of cod and haddock fishing on board RELENTLESS. J.R. was calling during the week to make sure the trip was a go after a low presure system moved in canceling fishing trips earlier in the week. With the weather cooperating with light wind, J.R. and his crew met the boat early in the AM with a frosty start to the morning. Once all the gear was stowed, introductions were made along with a safety brief, RELENTLESS was underway from Green Harbor in Marshfield, MA headed to Stellwagen Bank. Captain Curt Maxon along with Captain Jerry Mulcahy who was the mate for the day made sure everyone was all set for a great day of fishing.

Kyle Cahill of Rhode Island shows off a nice
white bellied codfish

Fishing East of Stellwagen Bank this group of anglers had a steady pick of haddock, cusk and some nice codfish to 20lbs. Most of the fish were once again caught on bait. The ride home was nice with everyone riding in the cabin while Jerry filleted the days catch allowing each angler to go home with plenty of fillets of both cod and haddock. JR and his crew have fished aboard RELENTLESS several times in the past. They decided their next trip would be a combination school tuna and cod fishing trip this summer. We encourage these trips due to the opportunity to go home with groundfish and tuna steaks.

Dan Potter of Scituate, MA holds a 30lb cod
caught aboard RELENTLESS

The crew of RELENTLESS had a great first day of the 2007 fishing season, fishing on Stellwagen Bank landing excellent numbers of haddock and some decent cod brought over the rail also. Fishing today was David Nava of Charlestown, MA, David Hegarty of Winchester, MA, Eric Hill of Pembroke, MA, Dan Potter of Scituate, MA, Todd McMahon of Marshfield, MA and John Niemiera from CT.

Dave Nava an avid fisherman from Charlestown holds a market cod he landed aboard RELENTLESS using a sea clam as bait

Due to early morning tides and dredging issues in Green Harbor this party met us early and we were underway just before 4:00AM. Once out the entrance, we had a full lit morning sky with a pretty full moon and it was not long before we were passing through a fleet of draggers working the western edge of Stellwagen Bank. Once we stopped in water around 150 feet, it was the beginning of a great day of fishing. Using fresh sea clams the haddock were being brought aboard with many bull (large) ones coming across the rail.

It was not long before the bank looked like the southeast expressway being the first day to legally land cod in the Gulf of Maine. This resulted in boats like the Viking Starship making the trek up from Montauk to join in on the action.

Repeat customer John Niemara from CT with one of the many haddock he landed today aboard RELENTLESS

Later in the morning we started to get into a few cod and the highlight of the day was the 30 LB steaker landed by Dan Potter on a clam. Needless to say he was very excited to see the fish come to the surface and finally to gaff by Shaun our mate for the day.

David Hegarty landed many fish aboard RELENTLESS
including this market cod aboard

At the end of the day each angler went home with plenty of fillets of both cod and haddock and discussed booking additional trips this spring and summer along with great shots of whales which were feeding in the area.
