TUNA TRIP

Friday June 20, 2008

Fishing continues to be excellent aboard the RELENTLESS fishing out of Green Harbor, MA. Last week anglers from Maryland, New Jersey, New York and locally stepped aboard, landing good catches of cod and haddock. The bite continues to be strong even though we need to work around the pesky dogfish. Most of the fish are being landed on bait with some quality haddock and cod coming aboard by the jig fisherman.

The tuna have arrived and the bite is very good with large fish being taken. As mentioned in earlier reports we landed a nice 66” fish on father’s day. Friday was a busman’s holiday with Captain Curt and Captain Shaun taking the boat out with friends and family. The day started out a little slow with hits by big stripers and blues trying to devour the large squid. If we were targeting striped bass it would be the best fishing in years with the number of large fish in the area.

Late morning the ice was broken when there were fish in the spread taking whacks at each squid bar in the spread, The port rig was never hit though and we had a knock down on the starboard with no joy and on the center rigger being trolled close to the boat, the rod doubled over as the reel screamed with the fish taking line. Capt Curt hoped on the rod and after about 15 minutes landed a nice fat 52” fish around 85 LBS.

In the afternoon the starboard rigger went off and this time Capt Shaun had the honors of fighting the fish and landed another 52” fish which was brought aboard, photos taken and released to swim another day.

The action is only going to get better as the water warms up and are booking private and shared charters for tuna, bass and cod fishing. Come aboard and try some of this great action. I can not explain the thrill of landing a tuna or even being aboard when one decides to jump on the trolled baits.

If you want more information or to discuss a possible trip call or email us.

TUNA TRIP

Father's Day June 15, 2008

I love it when a plan comes together even when it is not planned out. Yesterday while Capt Curt was out catching haddock, cod wolf fish and pollock, I was home deciding when to put the tuna gear back on RELENTLESS. The rods, bars, harnesses and other gear was all placed on board last night and my 0400 planned start was changed by the rest of the crew and we met at the boat at 0600.

Fishing with me on Father's Day were my two sons, Greg and Shaun along with one of our mates Hans and his daughter Nicole. After steaming across CCB and reaching the backside we found a few whales, bait and birds making it look fishy and interesting. It was not long before the port rigger popped and a very large bluefish was now part of our squid bar.

After clearing the lines and back on the troll for about 15 minutes the same rigger went off, this time it was no bluefish as the Momoi Diamond line ran off the reel and I thought for a moment I was going to be spooled by a large fish.

After reeling in the other lines Hans settled into the harness and cracked away. It was soon he found out he was not gaining a whole lot of line. Once he started gaining line he was in control and did a nice job till the fish had a good look at the underside of RELENTLESS and took off again. After getting back most of the line and now the fish was on for 35 minutes I noticed what looked like a chafe in the line at the waters edge. It was not pretty and after working the rod the chaffed section was now on the spool. A few more pumps and the fish was within reach as Greg leadered it towards the door and into the boat.

Nicole was full of inspirational comments for her Dad when he was fighting the fish and was in awe when she saw it laying on the deck. After peeling back some line to the splice we found it looked like fiber optic cable being split into several thin layers. I believe we were fortunate to land this fish which measured 66" and estimated to be 180 LBS on the length and girth scale.

On the way home we were looking for a few bass and Shaun noticed birds working a pile of bait. As I got closer I told Terry on the Riptide to get over here now and break out the heavy artillery. I stopped the boat and shut off the engine. Between the tide and the tuna feeding on this massive school of pogies the fish were actually being pushed towards the boat. Terry came in and had his two anglers on and Shaun dropped a fish on the Shimano Butterfly Jigging Rod. As I was in the cockpit watching I noticed the bait was pushed alongside the hull and the tuna feeding on these pogies were within 10 ft of the boat. Greg reached into the water and was pulling pogies out with his bare hands. They soon went down and the we were on our way again towards home.

After arriving and having a camera delivered we cut up the fish into loins for many folks including Curt and Jerry who came down for some fresh sushi and steaks.

This was a great fathers day that neither myself, Hans or our children will never forget and this is what it is all about.

Remember, RELENTLESS runs open boat and private trips for tuna fishing. IF you are interested in tangling with a great fish, give us a call or send me an e-mail.

Respectfully

Capt. Dave

COD TRIP

June 8, 2008

Fishing on board RELENTLESS on Sunday June, 8th was repeat customer Jeff Staples of Massachusetts. It was a spectacular day to be on the water with flat clam seas, no wind and plenty of whales and fish. The catch was primarily haddock with good numbers coming over the rail again. The fish were caught primarily on sea clams and some on jigs by the die hards.

COD TRIP

June 1, 2008

On June 1st stepping aboard RELENTESS was the Bilezitian party who fished aboard RELENTLESS last year. This year's trip according to Capt Curt was AWESOME and words could not describe it. Stepping aboard was Chad who was celebrating his 10th birthday along with his father Greg and uncle Jeff. Also joining them was there good friend Greg Everett.

After steaming out east of Stellwagen Bank, the first drop of the day produced two wolf fish which was followed by many large haddock and cod being landed primarily on jigs.

Greg Everett caught the bigger wolfish but the day belonged to Chad Bilezitian for a birthday fishing trip he will remember for a very long time. .For anyone who's dad or uncle introduced them to fishing this is what it is all about. Chad ended the trip on another high note when he caught the biggest haddock of the day which was an amazing 30". It was great to see a young man step aboard who fished like a pro landing many fish and taking care of the tackle like it was his own. I can not say thank you enough to this group as watching the smile on Chad's face let's us remember what this business is really about, taking people out to enjoy the day.

Thanks again to this crew for the great day and we hope to see you again next year.

COD TRIP

May 30, 2008

On Friday May 30th, we fished with repeat customer Stew Duncun and his five friends. Stew is from CT and has been fishing aboard RELENTLESS for the past three seasons always going home with plenty of fillets for the freezer. This year it was another day of nonstop codfishing on jigs. Everywhere you looked there were balls of bait on the bank consisting of sandlance and herring. The fish were full of sand eels as indicated int the photo below. Prior to leaving, Stew inquired about booking a tuna trip aboard RELENTLESS this summer and I am sure we will see him on the business end of a Shimano 30 class rod by the end of the season doing battle with a nice school bluefin tuna.

COD TRIP

May 29, 2008

Once again we had one of Rhode Island's finest police officers aboard repeat customer JR Carlow for some awesome cod and haddock fishing. Captain Curt found cod and pollock in about 125 ft of water which could not resist a jig and teaser combination when offered. The haddock on this day were tough to find but they did manage to put a few in the fish box sending everyone home with big bags of fresh white cod and haddock fillets for the freezer.

When the day was over, JR and his group of friends once again booked a Stellwagen Bank tuna trip aboard RELENTLESS for August. Thanks guys it is always great to have you aboard.

COD TRIPS

May 23 & 24, 2008

During Memorial Day Weekend 2007 Bernie Thomas, Anthony Caputo, Al Fichera and John Brosnan came aboard for two days of fishing on board RELENTLESS for cod and haddock. It was a great trip with near legal limits of cod each day and many quality haddock coming aboard also. Prior to them leaving last year they decided to make it an annual event and stepped aboard for two more days this year. Unfortunately Al could not make both days and repeat customer Peter Frackelton came aboard on Sunday.

This year once again these anglers were rewarded with some fantastic action primarily on jigs landing more cod than haddock on Saturday and Sunday it was the haddock bite that won out. It is always a pleasure having these guys aboard and Bernie has many more cod and haddock trips booked. Anthony and John booked the RELENTLESS for a tuna trip in July while Al booked a tuna trip in late June for his son Joe and himself. Last year when they came aboard the tuna were all over the place and Joseph landed his first bluefin tuna of the season when the boat hooked up seven times on Stellwagen Bank.

COD TRIP

May 18, 2008

We fished today with Mike Slightom and friends from the Stafford Springs area of CT. This group was put to the test with nonstop action for almost four hours of picking through the shorts. They managed a real nice mix of cod and haddock and a few macks. The bank was loaded with bait and the cod bellys were chock full. We fished middle bank on top and then east again for the haddock. Once again most codfish and some haddock on the jigs and more haddock later on bait.

COD TRIP

May 18, 2008

Fished with repeat customer Dan Clark and crew up from NJ. This group had almost nonstop action for the first two hours. We had to pick through lots of short to get some keepers in the box. We released well over 150 short codfish and tagged fifteen for the U. MASS Dartmouth SMAST program.

For some of the group it was their first cod trip on Stellwagen bank. Later in the trip we decided to head east for some Haddock. Fishing in deeper water around 170 ft we located some nice quality fish.

We also saw the first mackerel of the season as they were heavy from time to time.

This group went home with some nice fillets and hope to get back later in the season for tuna.

COD TRIPS

May 1, 2, 3, 2008

The fishing has been excellent with good numbers of cod and haddock coming aboard on both clams and jigs in the shallow waters of Stellwagen Bank.

On May 1st, repeat angler Ed Kelley from New Jersey along with three friends came aboard and had good numbers of cod and haddock on both jigs and bait. Last year, Ed and his crew had a banner day on haddock with a few steaker cod coming over the rail. This year the fish were all markets in the 6-8 LB range, but enough of them to send them home with good sized bags of fillets for the freezer.

On Friday, Mark Boutitte of MA fished bringing his father and four of his friends along. His 84 year old father is a great guy who brought along some nice custom made jigs for stripers as a gift for the captain. His jigs are some of the nicest homemade jigs that I have ever seen and his generosity is greatly appreciated. The fishing for Mark and his group was about the same as the day before with more haddock than cod being caught on the edge of Stellwagen Bank around the northeast corner. The fish hit both jigs and bait providing the group with plenty of fillets to take home to their families and friends.

On Saturday Patrick Lynch and group returned again after fishing with us last year for the first time. Pat's group caught near legal limits of white bellied cod fish and haddock fishing the shallower waters of Stellwagen Bank. When we returned this group of anglers had plenty of fillets in their coolers for plenty of fish dinners. Before departing for the trip back home, they discussed booking next years trip now to get it on the books on a desired weekend.

Currently RELENTLESS has availability for shared and private trips for cod, haddock, tuna and striped bass fishing. The dates for tuna are starting to fill quickly and it is recommended that you give us a call or e-mail to reserve a date to tangle with these fish. Last year's school bluefin tuna fishery was the best ever and we are looking at a repeat performance.

COD TRIP

April 27, 2008

Fished with Rich Riendeau and crew from RI. This group worked very hard to fill the fish box.We had small pockets of fish that seemed to scatter after we drifted over them. The morning bite was a little more steady.

Tom Johnson was high hook with a nice codfish around 24lbs.Almost all the action was on the jig today. This group had a nice mix of cod and haddock fillets to take home. We did find a large school of pollock east of the bank but they were all shorts.

COD TRIP

April 25, 2008

We fished today with repeat customer Bernie Thomas and crew. We enjoyed flat calm seas and some nice action waiting for us when we hit the bank. It was a slow pick most of the day with a lot of shorts. We did tag and release 11 codfish from 18-23 inches.

The guys were very patient and it paid off at the dock with a very nice mix of cod and haddock fillets and the fish of the day, a 22 lb wolfish (1st of the year) caught by John Brosnan.

Most of the action was in 130-160 ft and mostly jigs but the bait did take the wolf and a few haddock.

We fished on top and east of the bank toward the north. Great crew that fished very well.

COD TRIP

April 14, 2008

Today was a shared trip with repeat customer Brian Peacock and Dan Marcik and family. We left Green Harbor at 5:30 am and had a tough ride out in 3-5 chop. Luckily, once we hit the bank it settled down nicely. Once again the bite was nonstop on codfish. The morning bite had more shorts than keepers but a few hours later we started changing over and the box filled pretty quick. Most of the action was on jigs with teasers in about 130 ft. The bite was so good the group decided to stay all day and we didn't get a chance at the haddock. We saw a good amount of bait and whales.

COD TRIP

April 13, 2008

Fished with repeat customers Barney and Bernie and friends. We had calm seas and nice weather for April. The fishing was a steady bite of codfish with a mix of keepers and shorts. Later in the day we hit a different area and landed some nice haddock. We fished with both bait and jigs but the jigs seemed to do better. All thing considered it was a great day kicking off the 2008 season.
